Tesla Begins Construction on a New Lithium Refinery with the Goal of Supplying 1 Million Electric Automobiles

At its brand-new lithium refinery near Corpus Christie, Texas, Tesla has formally begun construction. At the new factory, the automaker intends to generate enough battery-grade lithium to support a yearly output of 1 million electric vehicles.

Tesla has a plan to construct a lithium refining factory on the Texas Gulf Coast, we learnt in September 2022.

The new facility’s objective is to create lithium hydroxide in order to assist Austin’s Gigafactory Texas’s own battery cell manufacturing.

We didn’t know much about the project at the time other than the fact that Tesla intended to move quickly and hoped to begin construction in Q4 2022.

It took a little while, but Tesla has now formally started construction at the site located near Corpus Christie, Texas.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held by the automaker today:

Tesla had stated that it intended to make investments of $365 million into the lithium facility, creating about 165 full-time employment in addition to an additional 250 temporary positions during the roughly two-year construction phase.

Elon Musk, the factory’s CEO, stated during the event that the facility will generate enough battery-grade lithium annually to construct roughly one million electric vehicles.

The corporation revised the schedule so that manufacturing would start in 2025 and construction would be completed the following year.

Musk once referred to the process of refining lithium as a “licence to print money,” and he has urged other businesses to join in since it still intends to purchase battery-grade lithium through other vendors.

In order to drive the industry towards greater efficiency, Tesla intends to introduce novel manufacturing technology with this factory.
