Iran Claims To Have Found Significant Lithium Resources, Which Are Essential For Electric Mobility

Lithium is a crucial component for the batteries of modern electronic devices and electric cars, and Iran claimed to have discovered vast quantities of the metal.

For the first time in Iran, a lithium reserve has been found in Hamedan, according to Mohammad Hadi, a representative of the ministry of industry, who was speaking about the finding of the rare element in the country’s western region.

The discovery, which was made less than a month ago in India’s Jammu and Kashmir, has increased the potential for electric mobility in the fifth-largest economy in the world.

How much of the Lithium reserve in Iran has been found?

As reported by news agency AFP, the director-general of the ministry’s operational department estimates that the reservoir has “8.5 million tonnes” of lithium.

A report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from 2022 states that 89 million tonnes of lithium had been found in total around the planet. Australia, Chile, Argentina, and China are the top producers.

Why is the discovery of lithium in Iran significant?

Lithium is a crucial component used in the creation of electric vehicle batteries. Given the severity of the threat posed by climate change, it is essential to allow cars to operate without emitting carbon dioxide. The phrase “fuel of the 21st century” is also used to describe it.

The rechargeable batteries used in cell phones and other modern gadgets also depend on this white metal.

The finding of lithium adds to Iran’s extensive natural resource reserves, which also include copper, iron, gas, and oil. International sanctions imposed against Iran as a result of its alleged involvement in nuclear proliferation have a particularly negative impact on its economy.
