In the initial month of a quarter, local sales were larger than its exports, which is unusual.
Unexpectedly, Tesla’s Model 3/Model Y sales in China as well as exports from China balanced out in April.
The total number of Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3/Model Y wholesale car shipments (local retail sales and exports), as reported by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), was 75,842 units as of April 2022 (up from 1,512 in April 2022, during which there was a lockdown).
* The CPCA does not track registrations or customer deliveries; it only tracks wholesale shipments.
The outcome is consistent with the above 76,000 units per month average for the entire year.
Over 305,000 worth of wholesale sales were made in total during the initial four months of the current year, a figure that’s 66 percent greater than at this same time last year.
China retail sales
39,956 MIC automobiles were sold locally by the firm in China last month, up from 1,512 units a year earlier. That accomplishment is the finest first-quarter result to date.
The final month of a quarter often has the highest Tesla MIC retail sales in China (the early half of the quarter is typically geared towards export).
In China, Tesla has sold in excess of 177,000 MIC electric vehicles locally so far this year, a 61 percent increase from the same period last year.
In other words, even after the price drop was implemented in January, the volume kept rising.
Export Data
The data states that 35,886 Tesla MIC vehicles were exported last month (as opposed to none a year prior due to lockup concerns).
It’s important to note that while exports have never been higher in April, they are now lower than they were in the initial months of the previous quarter (January and October).
The initial month of a quarter is often when Tesla exports the most cars, and the second month is usually when it exports the most cars overall.
In excess of 127,000 MIC vehicles have been exported by Tesla from China so far this year, a 73 percent increase from the same period last year.
Models
Model 3 and Model Y (each in various variations) are two MIC models that Tesla produces in Shanghai. Tesla Model 3 wholesale orders in April totaled 26,783 (retail sales across China plus export), while Tesla Model Y wholesale sales totaled 49,059 units.
