Lucid, a US-Based Electric Vehicle, Receives OLED from LG Display

30″ and up… In this year’s fourth quarter.

LGD expands its automobile OLED delivery history and is set to go into mass production.

LGD Mass Producing OLEDs for Car Displays

Lucid, a new electric vehicle startup in the US, will receive a 30-inch vehicle OLED from LG Display. Although Lucid’s financial predicament caused a delay in the overall plan, LG Display is anticipated to begin mass producing OLED for Lucid in the 4th quarter of this year. The industry leader in premium car displays is LG Display.

On the 21st, the market reported that LG Display intended to supply Lucid’s next-generation electric car model in the US with organic light emitting diodes (OLED) in the early 30-inch range. Early on, LG Display and Lucid collaborated on an automotive OLED development project, but Lucid’s financial difficulties caused a delay in the project’s schedule.

The next-generation electric vehicle model that Lucid will use the 30-inch OLED on also has a Two Stack Tandem construction, in which the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) OLED light emitting layers are stacked in two levels. In a two-tandem configuration, LG Display has previously mass-produced car OLEDs. A longer product life span can be anticipated if tandem construction is used. A 34-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) is used in the Lucid Air variant that the company has already made available.

The supply history of OLED for vehicles will be included if LG Display provides OLED to Lucid. The “MBUX Hyperscreen” infotainment system installed in the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle “EQS” scheduled for introduction in 2021 uses a display made by LG Display. 12.3-inch LCD panels and 17.7-inch and 12.3-inch OLED screens make up this product.

LGD – The Leading Automotive OLED Company

Currently, LG Display is working with Porsche and other businesses to develop OLED technology for automobiles. After several years of joint research initiatives with part manufacturers, finished vehicle manufacturers typically decide to mass-produce. As auto accidents can directly result in fatalities for people, automakers are cautious when it comes to implementing new technologies. The world’s leading manufacturer of electric automobiles, Tesla, continues to equip its cars exclusively with LCD.

OLED and low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which are categorised as high-end goods in the total automotive display industry, both rank well for LG Display, claims market research firm Omdia. With a share in the market of around 80%, LG Display leads the automotive OLED industry. Samsung Display is second. LG Display is third in the LTPS LCD market, behind JDI of Japan and AUO of Taiwan.

Vehicle display sales at LG Display last year were 20% higher than they were the year before. OLED and LTPS LCD-based devices saw a surge in new orders. The automotive display business has gained the trust of numerous international customers through differentiating technological competitiveness like OLED and LTPS LCD, and is strengthening its No. 1 position in the world, said Kim Seong-hyun, CFO of LG Display, at the regular shareholders’ meeting on the 21st.

LG Chem revealed in February 2020 that it had agreed to be Lucid’s only supplier of cylindrical batteries. The agreement was in effect until 2023. During the LG Energy Solutions exhibit at the InterBattery event that took place last week at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul, Lucid displayed the Lucid Air model.
