Tesla Formally Welcomes Non-Tesla Ev Customers to Use It’s Superchargers In The Us And Explains How It Works

Tesla has now begun to provide non-Tesla electric vehicle owners in the US with access to some Supercharger stations, and it has described how it works.

Although it has taken a while, we were aware that the moment had finally arrived when we noticed Tesla beginning to install the “Magic Dock” at several Supercharger stations in recent days.

The carmaker had not yet formally opened up the stations through the app and begun onboarding owners of electric vehicles to its charging network, even though those stations were now outfitted with the integrated CCS adapter to work with non-Tesla EVs.

Tesla formally began doing that today:

How it Works:

Everything is managed through the app, Non-Tesla EV owners only need to download the Tesla app, set up an account, and add a credit card to make payments before they may pull up to one of the select few Supercharger stations that are now fitted with a Magic Dock, which are currently located mainly in New York.

Electric vehicle owners can view the station and choose the stall where they park using the app. Following that, users just need to grab the handle where the CCS adaptor will emerge from the Magic Dock:

Because the station must communicate with the car through the app rather than directly, Tesla does advise that it may take up to two minutes to charge, which is longer than with a Tesla vehicle. The company created a brief film to demonstrate how to use the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EV owners:

Currently, it appears that there are just six stations in the state of New York that are accessible to non-Tesla EV owners, but as Tesla installs the Magic Dock at additional stations and constructs new ones, the number is anticipated to quickly increase.

What Do We Think:

It is quite remarkable that Tesla was able to design a Supercharger station experience that is virtually as efficient for non-Tesla EV customers as it is for Tesla owners.

We maintain that the experience will be at least as good as that at third-party charging stations, which were supposed to be made for electric vehicles other than Tesla’s.
