120,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles have been recalled, sunroof may fall while driving

On January 3, it was reported that Mercedes-Benz would be recalling more than 120,000 vehicles in the United States that had removable sunroofs.

These vehicles include C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS-Class models that were manufactured between 2001 and 2011.

According to documents filed with the NHTSA by Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes believes that the sunroof detached from the vehicle over time due to the deterioration of the bonding material on the sunroof.

It took Mercedes-Benz nearly five years from when it first reported the incident in 2017 to when it announced the recall last month, with three recalls occurring simultaneously. This is because all of the models in question have been out of production for several years.

The affected vehicles will be summoned back to dealerships for a repair inspection since there have been no reports of injuries related to the defect.

Mercedes issued a similar recall in 2019 for nearly 750,000 vehicles that dried in less than two minutes.

However, Mercedes and its suppliers suspected that the defect affected more vehicles than the initial recall, so in 2021, they expanded the recall to include models that took longer to dry out.
