NIO has Started Shipping its Flagship Coupe SUV, Which Will Go Up Against the Polestar 3

The EC7 electric coupe SUV, among the most aerodynamic SUVs available in the market, is being delivered to customers, according to an announcement made Friday by emerging Chinese EV manufacturer NIO. In addition with the Polestar 3, NIO’s novel flagship coupe is prepared to take on in an expanding market for premium electric SUVs.

The EC7, NIO’s newest electric vehicle, was presented this past December during NIO Day 2022. NIO claims its flagship SUV has industry-leading aerodynamics and efficiency featuring a drag coefficient that’s as low as 0.23 Cd.

In contrast, the 0.25 Cd Tesla Model X is regarded as one of the world’s most aerodynamic SUVs. The Polestar 3 sports a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd and is expected to start deliveries later this year.

The NIO EC7 represents a mid-large sized coupe SUV featuring a dynamic spoiler that can cut drag by 4% in Eco mode, Smart Matrix LED headlamps with LiDAR, and NIO’s second-generation NT 2.0 tech platform.

The EC7’s interior features a second-generation digital cockpit, sports seats along with zero-gravity mode so you can rest with your feet up, and a panoramic sunroof featuring smart electrochromic glass.

NIO’s SUV can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds thanks to its dual-motor AWD system and SiC power module, which produce up to 480 kW (643 hp) and 626 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.

A range of up to 304 miles (490 km), 395 miles (636 km), or 584 miles (940 km) can be covered by the EC7 using one of three battery options: 75 kWh, 100 kWh, or 150 kWh. However, keep in mind that these are merely CLTC numbers and that EPA typical figures are typically 25% lower.

NIO estimates that the EC7 will cost between 488,000 RMB ($70,599) and 578,000 RMB ($83,620), plus European costs following later.

How the Polestar 3’s flagship SUV compares to NIO’s?

The recently launched NIO EC7 will contend in China’s rapidly growing electric luxury SUV market. One of the most eagerly anticipated EV releases of the year will be the Polestar 3, the first electric SUV from Polestar, another up-and-coming EV manufacturer.

After experiencing success with the Polestar 2, Polestar presented its “SUV for the electric age” in October as part of the EV manufacturer’s new wave of products.

The Polestar 3’s interior also features a panoramic sunroof (made of high-tech glass) and an Android Automotive OS that is preinstalled.

The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds thanks to two electric motors that combine to provide up to 517 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque.

The Polestar 3’s range with a 111 kWh battery is up to 300 miles, but with the performance pack, it is just 270 miles. Although these are just estimates, they hinge on EPA standards.

The Polestar 3 has the automaker’s sleek, minimalist exterior design from Sweden, improved aerodynamics, and cutting-edge security features notably the font grille’s “Smartzone,” which essentially serves as a third eye with radar systems, cameras, and various other sensors.

With a starting price of 698,000 RMB (about 101,000) for the long-distance model and 798,000 RMB ($115,000) for the top-of-the-line SUV, Polestar revealed its electric SUV in China last month. The Polestar 3 will debut in the third quarter of 2023, according to the Polestar website.
