This is the first time ever after June 2021, that the European car market as a whole recorded a consolidating growth. And hence August is the first month whereby it records an increase in the total number of sales of passenger cars. In comparison to the last year of sales then it increases by 2% growth when it comes to electric vehicles.

Talking about the numbers, then over 159,000 electric cars were registered in August 2022. Specifically, the market share of EVs across the whole of Europe has increased in growth by 21%. Also, the battery-powered EV sales grows up to 12% to 99,000 units and hence got a 13% of share. Whereas in contrast, the plugin hybrids dropped 10% to 61,000. It makes it 8% accountable for the total market respectively.

With this increase in numbers, the year so far has seen 1.4 million EVs registered in Europe. The number is 20% of all car sales. And out of those, 870,000, vehicles were BEVs whereas 580,000 were plug-in hybrids. On the other hand, PHEVs are gradually losing market share to all-electric cars.

Apart from this, the Tesla Model Y acquired the sales. But VW ID.4 is not that far when it comes to Skoda Enyaq iV which captures the closer third place. Also, if looking at whole year numbers then it is clearly visible that Tesla is leading and is ahead of its competition. Concurrently, it is the Fiat 500e that progressively sells with a high number count and through this chasing Model 3 for second place.

While talking about the most famous brands and automotive groups of 2022. Whereby VW Group is dominating the European market with Tesla ranked at a distant 7th position. The number despite the fact that it’s making the most popular cars. The VW Group includes most luxury brands that consist of Porsche, VW, Skoda, Audi and Cupra among its electric car brands. Noticeably, the numbers are always altered in favour of big automotive groups like that.

However, the final outcome is positive when talking about the sales of all-electric cars. As gradually the numbers are going up, whereas the plugin hybrids are selling less day by day. In contrast, electric cars are subsequently grasping the market share. If not affected by constant supply issues then numbers are rather higher. Although the waiting time for electric cars in Europe varies from 4 weeks which tends to up to a year, that shows loyal support from the customers. Despite the long waiting time, the orders keep on coming and the manufacturers are struggling to keep the same.
